Life comes with it’s set of hurdles. As a student, I couldn’t wait to be an adult. I couldn’t wait to call myself a professional. Little did I know that becoming an adult would chew me up and spit me out, making me feel like a baby just learning to walk.
There were many pitfalls I encountered after graduating. I had difficulties finding my way in the work world. I walked in and out of jobs. I was even let go once.
As it relates to my creative efforts, that also wasn’t a walk in the park. I thought my creativity would be consumed and applauded by dozens of fans. But the truth is that in spite of my passion, the struggle still exists. It’s a struggle feeling like your voice is heard. You work hard to create in the hope that you will be understood. You produce and yet it appears as though the content disappears into a vast space.
The question we then have to ask ourselves is how do we keep moving forward? How do we summon the strength to continue on when it doesn’t even seem worth it? This is how I do it.
Embrace Joy In The Process
One of the big reasons I continue on with my creative pursuits is because I revel in the process. I enjoy coming up with ideas and seeing the idea come to life. Creating is actually a lot of fun for me. On the days when it doesn’t seem as though my work gets attention, I simply focus on enjoying the process of seeing my work out there. I focus on the joy I get from being creative.
Understand What Fuels Your Spirit
When you have a good understanding of what pushes and drives you forward, you keep going. I have a deep sense of purpose when it comes to writing and creating. I have a deep sense of purpose in wanting to create a community where women feel supported and encouraged. This purpose fuels my spirit so much that to not pursue it would feel like a betrayal.
Consider The Things That Matter
When things aren’t working out the way we want it to in our lives, we just want to give up. Everything just seems gloomy. It’s during these days that I have to consider what matters. What matters is that I’m alive and healthy. What matters is that I have a roof over my head and food to eat. What matters is that I have a family that cares for me. We have to always consider the things that matter when life is gloomy. It helps us to know that there is more beyond the setback.
Reflect On Your Emotions
Reflecting on my emotions always helps me to gain some clarity. It gives me perspective on what is the real source of my challenges. Sometimes we are quick to blame the outer world for our inner problems. When I reflect on my emotions, I’m reminded that at times, there is fear, doubt and insecurity that is causing me pain and anger. The reflection is what enables me to let go off what is not serving me so that I can focus on what matters most.
Get Some Advice and Encouragement
On the days when it doesn’t seem worth it, it never hurts to get some advice from others. Seek advice from people who understand or people with more life experience. Their words can help you to move forward in a much better way. Getting advice and encouragement from others can truly help you to know what is the next best step for you.
