Gina Bria’s been named the Real World Scholar with World Evolved Lecture Series. She researches, consults and speaks on topics related to innovative nutrition and hydration strategies. She founded Hydration Foundation at the Center for Social Innovation. She’s worked with scientists and clinicians to promote optimal hydration and HYCHIA, which develops solution-focused hydration products.
I met Gina two years ago when I was a volunteer at the TEDxNY office. I attended a session where she gave a talk on living a healthy lifestyle. We later discussed the importance of meditation and exercise.
Exercise is important to me because it affects how I function. But when I tell people I’m going to the gym or I need to go to the gym, they often say “you don’t need to, you look great.” Some people associate the gym with only looking fit but I enjoy how it makes me feel. After the gym, I feel content. This is because of the endorphins that the body produces while working out. After working out, I also feel energized which enables me to get things done. Staying active is thus a necessary component of my life because it leads to my happiness and productivity. I believe that living a healthy lifestyle is critical to living well. So I conducted a Q & A with Gina to share what her work entails. To share her insight as a health coach on what the body needs.
As the founder and Executive Producer of the Hydration Foundation, could you tell me what led you to creating the foundation?
The work often leads us. I was given the domain name: hydration foundation .org as a birthday gift. A friend and co-founder, Chelsea Briganti saw how having a site can be used to share knowledge and could be the start of something big. We believed that the site would be the best conduit to share information on hydration practices.
You’ve said that part of being a health coach is having wellness programs, that your employees can have the energy they need to carry out their projects. What particular program have employees found most effective and why?
Our workplaces are dehydrating more than we realize and more than ever before. Due to hydration being our body’s first defense against toxins, hydration at work is critical.
I recommend having 2- 4 cups of water in the morning. The idea is to soak your organs. Get them running, that way, by the time its afternoon, you won’t crash.
You’ve presented for Avon and The USA Women’s National Rugby Team; are there some challenges you’ve noticed amongst women regarding leading a healthy life? How can they rectify the problem?
Taking the time to have some movement as part of your life matters. To live a truly healthy life means to live truly with your own body. Women are more in their head and have left their bodies back on the road somewhere. We think our brain is going to get us there but that’s comparable to using the steering wheel and having left the rest of the car behind.
Do you have a few tips that everyone can adhere to in order to live a healthier life?
Health is in finding delight. We are living in one of the most anxiety-producing cultures. We have to recognize that it’s not normal and the problems we face are not personal. We have to find a new normal. We have to bring back delight, relationship, connection, and community back into our lives.
