The Necessity of Mentors

Mentors can have a significant impact on us. Having mentors influences how you see yourself and what you can become. I believe that we all need mentorship in one way or the other.

My English teacher in highschool encouraged me to speak up in class, to appreciate and recognize that my voice and words matter. She once left a post-it note in one of my essays where she said I should take pride in who I am and the insight I have to offer. That note is a great form of upliftment to me and I keep it to this day to always remind myself on days that I feel less than, that I am in fact capable.

In college, I would speak to a female faculty member who offered me guidance in terms of my career decisions. She also offered great wisdom by sharing her experiences with me.

My first job, I would discuss with and gain encouragement from a woman who worked in a different department than I did. Though she was not my direct supervisor, she provided me with support, resources, and insight to help me in my career decisions.

Mentors can have a significant impact on us. Having mentors influences how you see yourself and what you can become. I believe that we all need mentorship in one way or the other. What I’ve noticed about the beauty of mentorship is below.

Mentors offer Resources

We live in a busy world that it is all too easy to get lost in our hectic lives that we think we do not have the time to support the women around us. But supporting other women is necessary because in small and large ways, we need each other to thrive. No one makes it all on their own, we get help one way or the other. The great thing about mentoring and supporting others is that when you offer guidance, support and resources, we are more likely to do that for someone else because we know how it feels to be in that position.

Mentors Encourage

Words have power. We have to be wise and careful with the words we use towards each other. We should not get caught up with negative traits of jealously, anger and gossip towards one another because it serves no use. At my first job, I had the pleasure of having a desk mate who would encourage me and I would watch her do that to the other women around her. Through her, I understand how vital it is to encourage and support others in the workplace because her words of support made me feel valued and appreciated.

Mentors Are Authentic

Showing up as who you are matters because it creates trust and a bond. That is what leads to a good rapport among mentors. It’s best to be honest with the women around you. Who you are and what you have to offer could be the mentorship that another woman needs.
