Gift Idea: The Book Female Professionals Must Read

Sheryl Sandberg's "Lean In" is a great book for female professionals wanting to make the most of their professional career.

Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In” is an essential read for female professionals wanting to make the most of their careers. I read the edition with additional essays for recent graduates: “Lean In for Graduates.” It was informative and motivating. I hope that if you’ve read the book, you’ll pass it on because there are several significant points Sheryl touches on. I share a few below.

Sit At The Table

“You have to take opportunities and make an opportunity fit for you, rather than the other way around. The ability to learn is the most important quality a leader can have” Sheryl Sandberg.

It’s important to go after opportunities and make the most of where you find yourself. No road to success is ever a straight line. No matter the stage you find yourself in your career, know that there is always room to grow and learn. Do not be afraid to voice your opinion. Don’t be afraid to take initiative and work on a new project that could help your team. This matters because your ability to put yourself out there and absorb as much information can set you apart from those who do well and those who thrive.

Don’t Leave Before You Leave

Sheryl said that at work, a female colleague came up to her. She wasn’t sure she should take up more responsibilities. She asked Sheryl how she balances her work and personal life being a mother. Sheryl asked the colleague whether she’s planning to have a baby. The colleague replied no and that she’s not currently seeing someone.

You shouldn’t limit yourself by not taking more responsibilities or going after your goals if it’s what you’re truly aiming for at the moment. Don’t leave before you leave.

Listen to Your Inner Voice

“We need to listen to the inner voice that helps us know and express how we feel, face failure gracefully, and deal with conflict directly. Your inner voice is your compass. It will help you figure out the answer to “What should I do now?”

You shouldn’t let other opinions of how to lead your life drown your beliefs. We should get in the habit of reflecting on who we are and who we want to become. If you’re fortunate to make the decision of the career you want, choose the path that aligns with you. Make the decision to take your passions and values into account.

The video below by the author Sheryl is a fantastic talk on how more women can assume leadership positions.

Based on the video, what are your thoughts on Sheryl’s take on women and leadership?
