#MakeItHappen: Bloomberg’s International Women’s Leadership Summit

Bloomberg hosted it's International Women's Day leadership summit for college students.

I celebrated International Women’s Day by attending a leadership summit hosted by Bloomberg. The discussion was on career and leadership.

Leadership

“Strong leaders influence people. They know what to say and when to say it. They recognize their mistake”- Allison Allen, Leadership, Learning & Organizational Development at Bloomberg

Allison emphasized that leadership is not only from the individual in the highest position of authority. We all have the ability to lead. We all have the ability to make an impact.

Finding the Right Career Path

Jo Ryan, Business & Client Risk Engagement at Bloomberg said that her career path was not a straight line. She wanted to model and then later, she decided to go into sales. Jo said, “it took a lot of zig and zag.”

You shouldn’t be defeated if a particular path you were on isn’t working out. It’s part of the process. But the women emphasized the necessity to continue to expand your horizon. You have to be open to as many opportunities as possible. You have to be willing to try and fail because that’s how you learn. That’s how you grow.

Asking for What You Want

The women in the panel stated that women often shy away from asking for raises. We don’t want to be perceived in a negative light. However, if you feel you’ve done great work. If you feel as though you consistently deliver, then you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for a raise. In order to advance higher in your career and overall life, you have to practice assertiveness. Have the courage to speak up and ask for what you want.
